The Amazing Race Lesson Plan
Overview:
In groups of two or three, students will compete in the Amazing race. The race consists of 6-8 stations where physical or mental tasks that require students to work together as a team. Throughout the race students will be encouraged to use their devices to help them solve or complete each station. For instance, one station may require a team to assemble a balance board, balance for two minutes each on the board and research the name, origin and insertion of three muscles that are working during the exercise.
Prior to the start of the race each group would be required to log on to a pre-existing twitter account created for the class and assigned by the teacher. The teams would use this form of social media to report the answers required at each station throughout the race. At the end of the race each student would be required to create a tweet about their individual contribution to the group. In their self-reflection the student would need to include a comment about something positive they contributed and a comment about an area in which they could improve or a goal they would like to achieve.
Using twitter for this unit allows students to use social networking in a way that enhances their learning and understanding of the course material. Twitter is a great option for this lesson because it provides students with a digital record of what they complete. Students can refer back to their twitter feed to review course material, study for a test or help create a future fitness plans. Using twitter is also beneficial for the
teacher as it provides them the opportunity to focus on facilitating the race during class time and review student answers at a later date for assessment purposes.
